Natural Disaster Management

This chapter focuses on natural disaster management in the fragile Himalayan landscape. It highlights the unique environmental and geological conditions that increase disaster vulnerability in the region. Various types of natural hazards affecting the Himalaya are briefly reviewed. The chapter explains systematic approaches for disaster preparedness, mitigation, and response. Emphasis is placed on risk reduction strategies suited to mountainous terrain. Community participation and indigenous knowledge are identified as key components of effective disaster management. The role of planning, policy, and early warning systems is discussed. The chapter suggests integrated and sustainable approaches to minimize disaster impacts in the Himalayan region.
