One Sunday in October of 2016, my sister called and told me she was pregnant with her first child. At the time, she lived with my dad in Petaluma and as I paced my backyard in Chico listening to her, I couldn’t be happier. That Thursday evening my dad called with news of his own. With another grandbaby on the way he decided it was finally time to get sober. After many years of fits and starts with sobriety, he was following the advice of a friend and taking himself to the Emergency Room that night.
