This chapter examines the controversy surrounding Visit Saudi’s proposed sponsorship of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, a rare instance in which a high-profile sportswashing investment was successfully resisted. Drawing on media coverage, public statements, and academic discourse, the chapter analyses how a broad coalition of stakeholders—including female athletes, national football associations, political figures, and human rights organisations—mobilised to oppose the sponsorship. It situates this case within wider debates on sportswashing, soft power, and soft disempowerment, shifting the analytical lens from how sportswashing benefits authoritarian states to consider how sustained resistance can be effective and result in reputational harm for both the investing state and the sporting body involved. It offers new insights into the political agency of athletes and the conditions under which sportswashing efforts can be disrupted.

摘要
