In this chapter, the basic principles of therapeutic plasma exchange will be discussed—plasma separation techniques, mechanism of action of PEX, substitution solutions, anticoagulation, vascular access, concomitant immunosuppression, and possible complications of the procedure. More selective alternatives for PEX will be reviewed, as well as methods for cytapheresis.
