Ranajit Guha worked since the 1980s to break the colonial power’s silencing of subaltern groups. His life’s work sought to illuminate them and their plights. This endeavour became systematic in the Subaltern Studies series, which he founded. In his work, he drew on the Santal Rebellion, the Hul of 1855–1856 to support some of his arguments. This chapter investigates the extent to which interpretations of the rebellion illuminate larger colonial or national development phenomena. Ranajit Guha’s concepts and investigations on the Santals and the Santal Rebellion are used throughout.
