Redefining Sarnaism and the Politics of Sarna Code in Jharkhand
摘要
Sarnaism, an indigenous religion, became a significant topic of political discourse with the passage of the Sarna Code Bill by the Jharkhand State Legislative Assembly in 2020. Efforts to codify this indigenous faith have long sparked debates across social, religious, academic, and political circles. In this context, the term ‘Sarnaism’, commonly used among the Adivasis of central India to describe their faith, has gained prominence. Since India’s independence, Adivasi identity consciousness has been continuously redefined within the democratic framework, and this move has added a new dimension to that evolution. As religious politics takes center stage, Adivasi religiosity is being interpreted in multifaceted but often fragmented ways. The institutionalization of faith, the standardization of practices, grand celebrations of festivals, and religio-political demands are reshaping Sarnaism. This ancestral faith is being reimagined in a contemporary context, fostering a renewed sense of commitment among its practitioners. In a period marked by heightened religiosity— comparable in intensity to the years surrounding India’s partition—the marginalized Adivasi communities’ efforts to institutionalize their indigenous faith deserve broader discussion. This chapter explores the roots of these processes and examines their evolving dynamics.
