Unspoken Journeys: The Silenced Histories of African Migration
摘要
This chapter unearths the trajectories of histories silenced in the African migration story. Contemporary frames of the occurrence appear to be the primary focus, with explanations surrounding economic opportunities, disappointments with social and political underdevelopment, conflicts, wars, and religious upheavals emerging as the main constructs (Adebusuyi, 2020; Faist et al., 2023). Acknowledging the preponderant explanations, around the slave trade, colonialism and the disruptions of post-colonialism, the chapter posits that these factors have predominated because of the historical epistemic advantage of many migrant destinations, especially the West over Africa, which has been systematically worsened by the disposition of successive African power elite to undermine inward developmental efforts, over the love for the more progressive Western nations.
