Initially marginalising the ocean’s pivotal role for the EU’s sustainability transformation, the European Green Deal (EGD) gradually recognized its significance in climate mitigation, adaptation, and economic growth. Yet, its level of ambition in marine ecosystem conservation and restoration has proven relatively poor. This chapter evaluates the EGD’s targets and implementation instruments in terms of marine sustainability across key sectors -climate/energy, biodiversity and fisheries- highlighting challenges and opportunities in reconciling competing objectives for achieving healthy EU seas.

摘要

Initially marginalising the ocean’s pivotal role for the EU’s sustainability transformation, the European Green Deal (EGD) gradually recognized its significance in climate mitigation, adaptation, and economic growth. Yet, its level of ambition in marine ecosystem conservation and restoration has proven relatively poor. This chapter evaluates the EGD’s targets and implementation instruments in terms of marine sustainability across key sectors -climate/energy, biodiversity and fisheries- highlighting challenges and opportunities in reconciling competing objectives for achieving healthy EU seas.
