Enhancing Herbal Efficacy Through Phytosomal Formulation
摘要
Herbal extracts are natural sources as they acquired global distinction for their therapeutic potential and have been used for ages as an alternative to treat several diseases. Numerous secondary metabolites like flavonoids, polyphenols, and terpenes have been researched for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and cardio-protective therapeutic potential. However, herbal medicines have challenges in terms of their therapeutic efficacy owing to factors specifically poor bioavailability and low solubility. Liposomes and phytosomes both have cooperative strategies for herbal efficacy because of their special composition, variation, and structural properties and are highly versatile. However, the Phytosomal formulations have come out as a potential strategy to enhance the therapeutic effectiveness of herbal compounds and thus represent a novel strategy to overcome the challenges of herbal medicines and serve as an advanced drug delivery system that is designed to enhance the absorption and efficacy of plant-based bioactives. The phytosome aggregates formed between phytoconstituents and membrane phospholipids enhance the absorption, solubility, bioavailability, and utilization of these compounds as they are plant-derived encapsulated in phospholipid bilayers. This is an enhancement of the cellular uptake and delivery to target cells; it increases the therapeutic efficacy and reduces side effects. In conclusion, Phytosomal has a significant role in the field of herbal medicine and proved to be better than liposomal formulation. Such formulations have the potential to provide a safer and better-tolerated therapeutic approach by unlocking the potential of herbal compounds. The primary goal of this review is to introduce the concept of phytosomes, their synthesis, existing phytosmal formulations, and advances in phytosome technology.
