Diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state are two universally recognized acute hyperglycemic emergencies in insulin-dependent diabetes. The presentation can range from mild to life-threatening. Early recognition, timely treatment and continued monitoring are key to preventing acute and chronic complications. This chapter focuses on the diagnosis and principles of management of these conditions.
