Sustainable strategies in water infrastructure focus on innovative approaches that integrate environmental health considerations into design and management practices. Water, as a basic necessity of life, its availability, affordability, and accessibility remain very important to mankind. In pursuit of the actualization of Goal 6 of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), none of the SDG 6 targets are on track to be met. India is largely dependent on groundwater, which is being over-extracted for home, industrial, and irrigation purposes, causing it to be depleted at an alarming rate. Incorporating permeable pavements into urban planning can create more resilient, eco-friendly environments that align with natural water cycles and promote overall environmental health. This chapter explores the solution that combines innovative ideas with conventional construction methods: permeable pavements. For instance, the use of bioretention systems and permeable pavements can effectively reduce stormwater runoff, mitigate flooding, and improve water quality by filtering pollutants. Furthermore, integrating decentralized systems like rainwater harvesting, Water Vaulter Systems, and wastewater recycling not only conserves water resources but also reduces the strain on centralized treatment facilities. These pavements, used in roadways, parking lots, and other areas, help increase groundwater levels by allowing rainwater to percolate through and replenish the underground water table. However, sustainability is an essential paradigm for addressing global challenges. Therefore, it contributes significantly to the cause of water conservation, protecting the environment and sustaining human settlements in the face of the continuous urbanization trend. By promoting the efficient use of natural resources, sustainability encourages the adoption of water-saving technologies, integrated watershed management, and the reuse and recycling of water in urban and industrial systems. It also supports the reduction of pollution loads, the preservation of ecosystems, and the enhancement of climate resilience in rapidly expanding cities. Moreover, sustainable planning fosters inclusive urban development, improves public health, and strengthens socio-economic stability. Through coordinated policy frameworks, technological innovation, and community participation, sustainability ensures that urban growth remains environmentally responsible, economically viable, and socially equitable over the long term.
