Transformational Purpose
摘要
In this chapter we introduce transformational purpose as a content-specific, identity-integrated intention to fundamentally alter structures, systems, or conditions at scale. Unlike self-focused life aims, transformational purposes are ecologically situated and socially ambitious, prioritizing institutional and policy change over personal growth. Yet, whether those who pursue transformational purposes intentionally direct their efforts toward societal benefit relies on their incorporation and application of wisdom. When guided by ethical considerations that support collective prosperity and contribute to the greater good, transformational purposes can be an asset; without these components of transformational wisdom, they risk unintended or deliberate harm. Transformational purposes and wisdom can exist in a mutually reinforcing relationship, with wisdom effectively guiding purposes toward beneficial outcomes just as sustained pursuit of systemic change cultivates wisdom through engagement with complex moral and strategic challenges. Thus, we argue for increased understanding and cultivation of greater purpose-wisdom integration as a critical need for societal flourishing.
