Caring, broadly conceived, involves devoting attention and resources to improve the lives of humans, animals, and the planet, and is an important factor in many models of wisdom (Aldwin et al., 2019; Glück & Weststrate, 2022). We focus on compassion and forgiveness as two examples of caring empirically connected with wisdom (Bluth et al., 2022; Taylor et al., 2011). Transformational wisdom can inform caring and lead to sustainable efforts to improve many current world issues. This chapter explores the roles of compassion and forgiveness within transformational wisdom, emphasizing their importance in recognizing suffering and fostering reconciliation. We use the HEROE model of wisdom (Webster, 2019) to demonstrate the conceptual connections between definitional and structural components of transformational wisdom and caring as seen in multiple contexts (e.g., caregiver stress; war). Finally, we argue that, like other valued abstract concepts such as freedom and justice which are passionately defended and nurtured, transformational wisdom itself must be the recipient of care, by which we mean that effort and actions (e.g., political, educational, cultural) be directed to programs developed to strengthen wisdom’s identification and implementation as otherwise society risks losing wisdom as a valuable and venerated resource (Ferrari & Potworowski, 2008). We describe several educational, occupational, and community examples of caring for wisdom. Together, these qualities contribute to a holistic understanding of wisdom, offering practical pathways for cultivating personal growth and collective well-being.

摘要
