This chapter examines how contemporary children’s picturebooks depict the experiences of migration across the Mexico–U.S.A. border. Drawing from Critical Border Studies, Critical Childhood Studies and Children’s Literature scholarship, we argue that these multimodal narratives can foster a critical understanding of mobility and identity in young readers. Using conceptual metaphors of border phenomena and a sample of selected picturebooks set in this specific context, we analyse how routes, obstacles, and emotional geographies are represented and humanised through the interaction of word and image.

摘要

This chapter examines how contemporary children’s picturebooks depict the experiences of migration across the Mexico–U.S.A. border. Drawing from Critical Border Studies, Critical Childhood Studies and Children’s Literature scholarship, we argue that these multimodal narratives can foster a critical understanding of mobility and identity in young readers. Using conceptual metaphors of border phenomena and a sample of selected picturebooks set in this specific context, we analyse how routes, obstacles, and emotional geographies are represented and humanised through the interaction of word and image.
