There is a pressing need to transform the goals of science instruction to align with the needs of society. Advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and learning science pedagogy makes it possible to prepare students who can tackle contemporary challenges including increasing wildfires, flooding, and drought and become lifelong investigators. By starting in science classes, students can develop the ability to respond to new challenges, seek innovative solutions, and shape their own science learning. Informed by Knowledge Integration (KI) pedagogy to craft instruction that guides students to discover new ideas and distinguish them from their prior knowledge, we can develop generative, resourceful learners, and we can transform science classes into innovative design laboratories. Instruction informed by the combination of AI and KI can prepare students as creative designers who take initiative to learn science principles and processes in the service of investigations. These creative designers can become lifelong learners who explore and refine innovative solutions to dilemmas facing their communities and the planet.
