This chapter examines the role of Human-Building InteractionHuman-building interaction (HBI) in enhancing environmental sustainability of sportsStadium stadiumsSports stadiums. Understanding how stadium users (fans, spectators, staff, athletes, and performers) engage and interact with stadium spaces is essential for improving occupant comfort, sustainable behaviours and the overall environmental sustainability of stadiums. HBI principles offer valuable insights into creating meaningful user experiences while transforming stadiums into efficient, engaging and climate resilient spaces that support progress towards SDGs. This chapter introduces the concept of Stadiums as Environmentally Sustainable Community InfrastructureEnvironmentally sustainable community infrastructure (SESCI), positioning stadiums as catalysts for addressing global challenges related to sustainability, climate resilienceClimate resilience and community wellbeingWellbeing. Drawing on a systematic literature review, 20 interviews and 2 workshops with experts from stadiumStadium design, construction, operations and management, the chapter identifies the emerging trends, key factors, features and elements of a SESCI. These findings are synthesised to highlight two emerging industry priorities for creating SESCI and how HBI principles can be used to achieve these priorities. This chapter emphasises the importance of creating stadiumsStadium that actively engage with users and the surrounding community and environment. This chapter calls for a shift in mindset and subsequent actions that can extend stadium functionality beyond sports events and align stadiums with local community and environmental needs.
