Advancing Neighbourhood Communality with Intelligent Technologies in Nordic Superblocks
摘要
As a new urban planning and living concept, the Nordic SuperblockNordic Superblock aims at providing socially and environmentally sustainable housing. It promotes a new scale of sharing spaces, functions, and services between housing blocks, utilising novel technologies and fostering improved neighbourhood communalityNeighbourhood communality. Intelligent technologyIntelligent technology solutions have the potential to advance residents’ communality in their neighbourhoods. However, the design of intelligent technologies that support neighbourhood communality lacks design guidelines. In this study, we conducted a literature review and qualitative scenario-based interviews to form an initial design framework for advancing neighbourhood communality with intelligent technologies in Nordic SuperblocksNordic Superblock. To gain insights in the potential of this technology and its design context, we interviewed design experts and residents of urban neighbourhoods. The results encourage a hyperlocal design, place-based intelligent technologies as well as organising co-designCo-design activities that can simultaneously function as communal events. From the residents’ perspective, neighbourhood communality can be realised in shared spaces. In this context, intelligent technologies have a supportive role. In designing intelligent technologiesIntelligent technology to advance neighbourhood communality, co-designCo-design actions should iteratively assess the impacts of the design outcomes on the components of neighbourhood communalityNeighbourhood communality: shared space, social interactions, and social ties. The framework provides a template for considering design outcomes on micro-, macro-, and meta-levels.
