Gender Equity and Sustainable Development Goals: AI for Mitigating Gender-Based Violence
摘要
Gaining gender parity and empowerment of women across the globe is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Women’s equality is an integral aspect of inclusive and sustainable development, and the success of all SDGs depends on the achievement of Goal 5—the attainment of gender equality. However, this entails eliminating or reducing all forms of violence against women, including intimate partner violence (IPV) and sexual assault (SA). The current chapter conducts a narrative literature review to delineate the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in restructuring and improving violence mitigation programs, and creating safer and more accessible support-seeking services for the violence survivors. For instance, AI can process vast amounts of available data, identify complex patterns of IPV and SA, and create predictive analytics for social services and law enforcement, in order to better identify at-risk individuals. Similarly, AI chatbots can engage with violence survivors digitally, and provide them with immediate support and information tailored to their needs. AI can enable service provider organizations to be better equipped to allocate resources to high-risk survivors, facilitate quicker responses to incidents of IPV and SA, and overall help to foster a more supportive environment for survivors where their safety is prioritized. In the long term, it is essential to create targeted responses, design tailored support services and generate improved resources for ensuring sustainable violence mitigation programs to ensure a path towards the achievement of Goal 5. The role of AI cannot be underestimated for engendering a restructured IPV and SA service delivery with enhanced prediction and prevention strategies catering towards a broader spectrum of cases and survivor groups, thus promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment.
