The paper discusses the structural retrofitting of the Church of St. Francis of Assisi on Kaptol in Zagreb, Croatia. The complex comprises a monastery, a church, and a bell tower. The Church and Monastery of St. Francis were constructed between 1255 and 1264. In 1435, a fire destroyed the monastery, church, bells, and workshops. The church was rebuilt around the mid-15th century, and it is assumed that the bell tower was erected at that time. Throughout its long history, the building has undergone numerous reconstructions and suffered damage from several fires and strong earthquakes, notably in 1880 and 2020. All structures (church, monastery and bell tower) sustained significant damage in the Zagreb earthquake on March 22, 2020, with magnitude of 5.5, and the subsequent Petrinja earthquake on December 29, 2020, with a magnitude of 6.4. This paper covers: (1) the causes of structural damage and observed damage in typical structural elements, (2) engineering approaches for structural rehabilitation and strengthening, including specific retrofitting details, (3) numerical analysis of structural models using both continuous (FEM) and combined continuous-discrete (FEM-DEM) mechanics, and (4) characteristic works related to the rehabilitation and strengthening of the structure. The reconstruction of the monastery structure was completed in 2024.

摘要
