Injection Techniques on Stone Masonry Walls to Improve Mechanical Properties and Evaluation of Its Effectiveness Through Non-Destructive Sonic Test
摘要
In multi-layered stone masonry walls, it is common to see loose of binding mortar and formation of voids in the inner section (known as the core) due to environmental effects over time. In such structures, although the mechanical properties of the wall or its quality are possible to obtain through non-destructive field tests, there is a lack of assessment after improvement applications in practice. Various experimental studies have determined that the injection of lime-based grouts into walls may lead to a significant increase in mechanical properties. Thus, various academic sources and guidelines recommend engineers to use improved mechanical properties after injection in their assessment and strengthening proposals. However, the effectiveness of the interventions is questioned due to the diversity in existing structures and uncontrollable factors during the application process. Within the scope of this study, sonic test applications to determine the improvement in mechanical properties of the walls were carried on a historical masonry mosque in Gaziantep, Turkey. Data collecting, before and after the injection on a sample building was repeated at specific time intervals and the effectiveness of the injection was assessed. The factors affecting the success of the method, observations and tests methods are discussed.
