By means of a standardized online survey, the study analyzes how football fans in Switzerland dealt with the boycott calls regarding the World Cup in Qatar. The aim was to find out the initial amount of support for the idea to boycott the event and the proportion of the people who carried out the boycott, the reasons why the boycott was, or was not, carried out, and the general view of the public on the effectiveness of boycott and the role of politics in sport. Of the 461 people who participated in the survey, about a quarter carried out the boycott, and another quarter initially also intended to do so. The social and human rights situation in Qatar was considered a more important reason for a boycott than environmental or ethical concerns. The main reason stated for non-compliance with an intended boycott was being with friends and relatives who watched the matches. Overall, people who are politically on the left, younger people, and women were more likely to follow the boycott calls, and they tend to have more positive views on the effectiveness of boycotts in general and on the politicization of sports.
