Chapter 4 discusses the many ways in which behaviour communicates how children are feeling. It argues that behaviour often communicates a need that may be outside the child’s awareness. As in other chapters, the emphasis is on relationship-building through sensitive understanding of what is behind a child’s potentially challenging behaviour. The chapter explores why children may not be able to communicate their feelings verbally and why this can be almost as hard for adults when asked to engage in honest reflection. The ‘Six Stages of Distress’ model in introduced, alongside that of the ‘Five R’s’.
