The Impact of Roadwork Zones on Vehicles Speed
摘要
The presence of roadworks has been identified as a contributing factor to numerous accidents and data collected demonstrated that 94% of these incidents were attributed to speeding and distraction (ASAPS, 2022). It is crucial to investigate the reasons for which they occur. The objective was to investigate the perception of the users in presence of the roadwork zone, analysing the correlation between the driver’s workload, the speed and the presence of roadwork signs. The study comprised a total of 10 participants who were required to cross the same segment of an urban road in two separate laps. During the initial lap, the road were ordinary; however, during the second lap, the segment was characterized by the presence of a roadwork. Drivers were invited to wear a Mobile Eye Tracker to record the eyes movements, while the car was equipped with a Racelogic Vbox Video device to measure kinematic behaviour. In order to investigate the change in driving task and the influence of roadwork, it was essential to compare the results from the two laps. The findings indicate that, in the presence of roadwork, users exhibit more attention to road signs relative to their surrounding infrastructure and a reduced speed compared to the regular segment. Nevertheless, the majority of road users tend to disregard speed limits and fail to comply with the instructions indicated by these signs. In terms of road safety, the user’s behaviour is found to be inadequate in terms of caution for the prevailing road conditions.
