Welcome to the field of health informatics! We are excited to introduce our readers to this maturing and changing field. This textbook was developed to fulfill the need for an introductory-level resource tailored to students and professionals who are new to the field of health informatics (HI), as well as to those who are needing to fill some knowledge gaps. It originated as an idea from a community of health informatics professionals dedicated to education at the baccalaureate level and grew into a textbook that stretches across knowledge and skill levels. The American Medical Informatics Association’s (AMIA) ten foundational domains of health informatics education at the baccalaureate level were used as the guiding principles in writing this book (Khariat 2023). These will be discussed in more depth below.
