In this chapter, we present the history of Neuroradiology in Switzerland and of the Swiss Society of Neuroradiology (SGNR). Neuroradiology developed in parallel in the main university centers; in the 1980s, there were two main training centers, Bern and Zurich, that would promote the establishment of a common Swiss curriculum that would be adopted quickly in all centers under the auspices of the FMH (Swiss medical association). Since its beginnings, Swiss neuroradiology is heavily centered on angiographic techniques, which led to Switzerland being a pioneer in the endovascular treatment of cerebrovascular diseases. In addition to this, Swiss neuroradiologists have also been fervent proponents of advanced techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the CNS. Thus, MR imaging with advanced techniques supported a rapid development of endovascular techniques for the treatment of stroke, aneurysms, and arteriovenous malformations, performed at the highest possible levels in order to improve the outcomes of Swiss patients and promote science in the field of neuroradiology. Additionally the Society provides training during the yearly congress and courses with an emphasis on neuroradiology being a complete specialty comprising both diagnostic and interventional aspects.
