The focus in this chapter is on the continued incursion into the literary of sanative readings of the ocean and bodies of water. A prime advocate of the health benefits of the sea was Tobias Smollett whose medical knowledge is focused on in this chapter as a context for understanding both his satirical intentions at the beginning and end of his life and career and the influence his positive view of the sea on the picaresque form of his writing. As a prime influence on the development of the British novel, Smollett remains neglected as a physician-novelist whose knowledge of both fields informed his fiction.
