Madness and the Sea: A Neglected Visual Iconography
摘要
This chapter focuses on the visual arts to offer a comparison between the impact in literary works of the neglected discourse of the sea as realm of sanative recovery for sufferers from melancholia and subsequent related modern iterations of forms of mental ill-health. The use of the motif of bodies of water in representations of melancholia, melancholy and other dismal moods is traced from the impact of Albrecht Dürer’s works to that of Edvard Munch.
