The Seen and The Silenced
摘要
This chapter considers events that happened during May 1956 in the following five domains: science and technology; politics, society and the economy; entertainment, arts, and culture; celebrity and famous names; and sport. Focusing here purely on developments in science and technology, we consider: an interview about rocketry with Wernher von Braun; Meyer’s discovery that Venus has an exceptionally high surface temperature; the agreement to build the Big Ear radio telescope in Ohio; John Wheeler’s trip to Copenhagen to drum up support for Everett’s many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics; the publication of a seminal paper on carbon dioxide and climate change by Gilbert Plass; and Woodward’s first total synthesis of reserpine.
