Focusing here purely on developments in science and technology, we consider: Gödel’s letter to von Neumann in which he outlines the P vs NP problem; Medawar’s landmark paper on acquired immunological tolerance; the setting of a new world air speed record by Peter Twiss; and the crash of a US Air Force Boeing B-47E Stratojet carrying two capsules of nuclear weapons material.
