This chapter discusses the novel The City and the Stars and its author Arthur C. Clarke. We draw parallels between one of the themes of the book, namely exploration, and the focus in the real world in 1956 on exploring the limits of technology. We also discuss Clarke’s delight in exploration and consider the extent to which his decision to explore the seas around Sri Lanka, and to leave the UK to live on the island, might have been driven by social factors in place at the time.

摘要

This chapter discusses the novel The City and the Stars and its author Arthur C. Clarke. We draw parallels between one of the themes of the book, namely exploration, and the focus in the real world in 1956 on exploring the limits of technology. We also discuss Clarke’s delight in exploration and consider the extent to which his decision to explore the seas around Sri Lanka, and to leave the UK to live on the island, might have been driven by social factors in place at the time.
