This chapter considers events that happened during October 1956 in the following five domains: science and technology; politics, society and the economy; entertainment, arts, and culture; celebrity and famous names; and sport. Focusing here purely on developments in science and technology, we consider: publication of the first issue of Spaceflight magazine; the official opening of Calder Hall nuclear power station; Paul Kuroda’s argument that a natural self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction is possible; Sabin’s announcement of a polio vaccine that can be administered; and the first landing of an airplane at the geographic South Pole.
