This chapter considers events that happened during August 1956 in the following five domains: science and technology; politics, society and the economy; entertainment, arts, and culture; celebrity and famous names; and sport. Focusing here purely on developments in science and technology, we consider: the connection of Calder Hall nuclear power station to the electrical grid; the teenage Jimmy Blackmon’s home-made rocket in the US; the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles by Korolev and his team in the Soviet Union; and observations of the Breitscheid meteorite in Germany.
