Focusing here purely on developments in science and technology, we consider: the famous quote by Sir Richard Woolley in which he argues against the feasibility of space exploration; the discovery of new oil fields; the clarification of the link between smoking and lung cancer; and the establishment of the Halley station in Antarctica.
