The Green Public Procurement (GPP) is one of the effective tools for advocating sustainability with considerations for environment in public procurement decisions. Across the world, some countries have formulated GPP frameworks. India presently lacks a dedicated policy framework for GPP. The chapter examines various initiatives undertaken by Indian government for facilitating GPP across multiple sectors. The chapter draws attention toward the evolving landscape of GPP in India. It analyzes pivotal government efforts, industry responses, and limitations in execution. This chapter includes an analysis of national laws such as General Financial Rules (GFR), policy guidelines by various ministries. Besides, the chapter examines the possible ecological as well as economic impacts of GPP in India. In other words, analyzes probable policy interventions needed to strengthen and institutionalize GPP in India. The chapter concludes with policy recommendations for developing countries like India who are seeking to upgrade their GPP strategies. India can serve as a powerful example—a beacon of light—for countries in the Global South looking to advance environmentally responsible public procurement. It advocates for multi-pronged strategy for GPP while deriving lessons from global best practice.
