This conceptual paper highlights children’s literature as an invaluable and organic tool for deliberately connecting children to sustainability concepts through interactive read-aloud experiences. It provides concrete examples of read-aloud prompts aligned with three published children’s books that tackle diverse sustainability topics. It serves as a model for educators to use and imitate in formulating effective discussion prompts in alignment with relevant children’s literature to foster critical thinking and reflection about complex sustainability issues. The paper aims to bridge the gap between what educators know their students need and actual practices that take place in the classroom by making such interactive read-aloud notions concrete and accessible to educators keen about sustainable development. The approach fosters critical thinking and reflection about complex sustainability issues to inspire children to act towards contributing to a sustainable future.

摘要

Educators worldwide now recognize that prioritizing children’s awareness of sustainability matters is essential for cultivating generations with a strong sense of responsibility toward their communities and planet. This awareness stems from the realization that attitudes and values about social equity, economic development, and environmental protection are shaped in childhood and often evolve into actions later in life.
