Which Skills Have Been Required by the Accountants’ Employers in Portugal via LinkedIn?
摘要
The frequent contextual changes in which the profession of certified accountant develops, as well as the advent of new recruitment platforms, justify a continuous re-analysis of the skills applicable to the job market. This study analyzes the differences between the soft skills and hard skills required by employers in job advertisements on LinkedIn for the role of a certified accountant. An exploratory and quantitative methodology is used. Through content analysis, 161 job advertisements published on LinkedIn were analyzed during the period from April 2021 to August 2022. Skills were divided into hard skills and soft skills. Data analysis was performed using non-parametric statistical tests, namely the Wilcoxon, and Mann-Whitney tests. The Wilcoxon test revealed significant differences between skills related to both soft and hard ones. In turn, the Mann-Whitney test showed that technology-related entities require more interpersonal skills compared to personnel recruitment and selection entities, which prioritize primarily technical skills. Hard skills continue to play a more prominent role in the first phase of the recruitment process. Instrumental skills stand out in the soft skills, while proficiency in a second language, tasks supporting the preparation of financial statements and information technology skills are particularly relevant in the context of hard skills. This study may contribute to Higher Education Institutions aligning the skills developed by students with those required by the job market, promoting activities or curricular changes to improve their integration into it and increase the future professional success of accounting students.
