I imagine each of us as caught up in an enormous, turbulent river. We were born midway through its course, and we will die before we reach the ocean, our bodies dispersing back into water. We cannot escape it. The turbulence is created by the intermingling flows of individuation: physical, biological, psychological, social, technical, and who knows what else. We are in some important sense the river, some of the parts of it that woke up, but that we find anything important or that anything makes sense at all is because we have temporarily managed to separate ourselves from it. We must cherish this temporary condition because in it, we can do what the river itself cannot. The myriad things flow through the river with us, changing as we do. It is through them, through each other, and through at times letting water in and at times forcing it out that we have any ability to direct our course. There is nothing else to do but to survive, to enjoy, and to enjoy others’ enjoyment.
