Silk is often described as the “queen of fabrics” or the “thread of gold” owing to its lustrous appearance, elasticity, and durability. It has long been synonymous with luxury, class, comfort, elegance, and purity. This chapter aims to provide a detailed introduction to silk, based on its origin, classification, and history. A comprehensive account of the sericulture process, or silk farming, which is typically defined as the cultivation of silkworms for silk production, has also been discussed. The most sought-after varieties of silk, such as mulberry, tussar, muga, and eri, produced from different silkworm species, have been explored with significant emphasis on specific aspects related to them. Furthermore, the production of silk yarns, which significantly contributes to the production of high-quality silk fabric, has been discussed along with the main steps involved in the silk fabric production. Finally, the challenges associated with silk production, particularly in terms of sustainability, have also been addressed, and future trends have been analyzed to accommodate contemporary innovations in this sector.

摘要
