Generative AI Framework for Professional Development for K-12 STEM Teachers and Educators

The rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming today’s professions, and education is no exception to this wholesale process of digital modernization, particularly with the growing trend of Generative AI now being utilized within K-12 STEM teaching. These tools can help educators in various ways, such as instructional design and also in offering personalized learning to students; however, it is critical that teachers integrate these tools effectively and appropriately. Beyond their technical application, critical evaluation is key to making this change successful and effectual. Thus, educators need much more than simple access; they require a deep understanding of AI’s role in modern-day teaching, from curriculum development to classroom application, in order to ensure its effective and responsible implementation. Based on these facts, this chapter directly addresses this crucial step change by presenting a comprehensive Generative AI framework specifically designed for K-12 STEM teachers and educators. The developed framework encompasses several key areas: AI Literacy Competencies, providing a foundational understanding of Generative AI, its workings, capabilities, and limitations, including concepts such as large language models and image generation. It also provides Ethical and Responsible Use Guidelines, navigating moral considerations like bias and privacy, alongside practical aspects such as attribution. The framework also includes Pedagogical Integration Strategies for the effective use of Generative AI within STEM teaching as a means to delivering enhanced differentiation and personalized learning. Content Creation and Adaptation Skills are also covered by the framework, empowering teachers to generate and refine AI-created materials. Additionally, the framework emphasizes Critical Evaluation Frameworks, helping educators to assess AI content and to also teach their own students how to do the same. Finally, the framework aids Prompt Engineering Proficiency, focusing on helping users to craft effective prompts to guide AI tools. By equipping educators with these various competencies, the developed framework is aimed at fostering a more dynamic and effective learning environment, ultimately helping to enhance the educational experience for both teachers and their students in the age of intelligent technology.
