This chapter aims to familiarise readers with the breadth and depth of the book, the existing scholarship on rural crime studies in Africa, and the identified gaps within the literature. It will commence with a profile of rural Africa, examining crime, justice, and policing issues pertinent to the continent. Although the primary focus is on Africa, the chapter will also offer a broader perspective on rural criminology worldwide, including some historical context. Additionally, it will articulate the rationale behind the book, highlighting its uniqueness as the first comprehensive exploration of rural criminology in Africa. It will conclude with an overview of the themes and chapters explored throughout the book.
