Adapting designs to local climate conditions is an important consideration in achieving energy efficient structures. This chapter provides a broad look at zero energy building design strategies including climate considerations, passive design, energy efficiency, active design strategies, and on-site energy generation. Particularly, it examines the integration of passive design measures with active systems to ensure that buildings remain energy-efficient, resilient, and aligned with long-term climate neutrality goals. In addition, it discusses the importance of operational and embodied energy in building life-cycle assessments.
