A Thematic Analysis on Recent Advances in Smellscape and Soundscape Research for the Built Environment
摘要
The quality of the built environment is shaped not only by the thermal and visual performance of buildings but also by other sensory dimensions, such as sound and smell stimuli. Current research highlights the crucial role of sensory elements in shaping public well-being and enhancing urban liveability. Despite their significance, these studies are often limited by the absence of standardized and replicable methodologies and clear design guidelines. Reviewing 25 papers and conducting a thematic analysis, this contribution aims to identify key themes, recurring methodologies, and practical objectives in sensory perception studies, specifically focusing on the perception of sound and smell environments. The obtained results highlight the need to expand the studies on soundscape and smellscape, proposing paths for developing cohesive, practical methodologies and standardised guidelines. Integrating sensory considerations as fundamental elements of urban planning and design strategies could significantly improve their liveability and quality, moving beyond a purely functional approach to create human-centred environments.
