Impact of Ca and Na Bentonite on the Consolidation Behaviour of Red Mud
摘要
Red mud (RM) and a mixture of red mud and bentonite were investigated as potential landfill liner materials. Understanding the consolidation behaviour of the mixtures is essential to utilise it as a landfill liner. The present study investigated the effect of bentonite addition on the consolidation behaviour of the red mud. Consolidation parameters such as coefficient of compressibility (Cc), coefficient of volume change (mv), coefficient of consolidation (Cv), and hydraulic conductivity were assessed. Bentonite percentages of 3, 6, 9, and 12% were considered for this study. Test results using Na-bentonite indicated reductions in Cc, mv, and Cv with bentonite additions up to 9%. As the bentonite percentage was further increased, these values also increased. In the case of Ca-bentonite, the values of Cc, and Cv increased with an increase in the percentage addition of bentonite. The value of mv decreased with an increase in the percentage addition of bentonite. The value of hydraulic conductivity was increased with an increase in the percentage addition of Ca-bentonite. Whereas, in the case of Na-bentonite, the value of hydraulic conductivity was decreased with an increase in the percentage addition of bentonite up to 9%; a further increase in the percentage addition of bentonite resulted in an increase in the value of hydraulic conductivity.
