Soil suction is a controlling parameter of the engineering behavior of unsaturated soils used in landfill liners. The combination of bentonite's swelling capacity and zeolite's ion-exchange properties makes these mixtures a good candidate for preventing long-term contaminant migration. Therefore, as landfill liner material, the suction characteristics of compacted zeolite–bentonite mixtures (ZBMs) should be known depending on different factors. The present study investigated the suction properties of compacted ZBMs for varying bentonite contents. The suction characteristics of powdered zeolite and 0, 10, and 20% bentonite in ZBMs were measured and compared with each other. The soil suction measurement techniques chosen were the Hyprop (Hydraulic Property Analyzer) and filter paper method. The findings obtained from these two methods were also compared. The results show that the suction capacity of zeolite increases with finer grain size. As bentonite content increases, both mixtures’ matric and total suction increase. The suction values obtained using the filter paper method were generally higher than those obtained with Hyprop..

摘要
