A Dubious Deity
摘要
Among the many unusual beliefs and faiths associated with the alternative religio-cultural narrative that has grown up in Mexico in response to the protracted ecosystem of inseguridad is the worship of a deity represented in the form of a skeleton. The “skeleton saint” has a wide following and is believed to have the power to address the everyday security challenges faced by her devotees. A complex figure, she is adored and reviled in equal measure by her devotees and detractors. Crucially, she is patronised by a host of individuals who feel marginalised—either because of their fate or by design.
