E-commerce and online ordering platforms revolutionized business and commerce operations worldwide. The change in customer preferences combined with the rising use of online ordering platforms presents both new opportunities and challenges for businesses such as those in the hospitality industry. The purpose of this study is to assess how online ordering platforms affect the total revenue of restaurants and takeaway businesses in the UK. The UK hospitality industry stands out as a top-performing sector because of its significant economic impact on the country. The expansion of online ordering services such as JustEat, Deliveroo and Uber Eats has created an extensive market within this sector which now attracts worldwide academic research. Research literature mainly examines quantitative data such as sales figures without exploring qualitative aspects. Businesses need to evaluate how management's opportunities and challenges from these changes affect actual sales performance. This research aims to understand online platforms’ contribution to sales and revenue alongside their benefits and disadvantages while identifying measures to enhance their effectiveness for stakeholders. Through 15 semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis, this research gained insight from restaurant owner-managers on their experiences with online ordering platforms and how these services influenced their sales performance. The research data analysis confirmed the first objective of exploring how online ordering platforms affect restaurant and takeaway sales in the UK. Additional goals regarding the management opportunities and challenges introduced by ordering platforms were briefly examined using interview data. The study includes several recommendations for both companies and policymakers that can assist stakeholders in achieving better operational management.
