The Impact of Leadership Capabilities on Achieving Sustainable Development: An Analytical Survey Study at Al-Nahrain University
摘要
This study investigated the impact of leadership capabilities on sustainable development achievement at Al-Nahrain University by examining relationships between five leadership dimensions and four sustainability outcomes. Using a descriptive analytical methodology, data were collected through a validated structured questionnaire from 321 faculty members selected via stratified random sampling from 1,636 total faculty. The instrument measured leadership capabilities (strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, change management, decision-making, ethical leadership) and sustainable development dimensions (environmental, economic, social, institutional) using Likert scales with reliability coefficients exceeding 0.78. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations, multiple regression, and path analysis using SPSS 26.0. Results demonstrated strong positive correlations between leadership capabilities and sustainable development (r = 0.67, p < 0.01), with ethical leadership showing the strongest relationship with institutional sustainability (r = 0.72). Leadership capabilities achieved high overall ratings (M = 3.47), while sustainable development outcomes reached moderate levels (M = 3.30), indicating unrealized potential. Regression analysis revealed that leadership dimensions explained 57.3% of variance in sustainability outcomes, with ethical leadership as the strongest predictor (β = 0.278, p < 0.001) followed by strategic thinking (β = 0.224, p < 0.001). Change management emerged as the weakest leadership capability requiring development. The study recommends establishing comprehensive leadership development programs emphasizing change management skills, creating dedicated sustainability units, implementing environmental management systems, and developing governance frameworks with accountability mechanisms. Future research should employ longitudinal designs across multiple institutions and cultural contexts. These findings provide evidence-based guidance for universities seeking to enhance sustainability outcomes through targeted leadership development, particularly in Middle Eastern higher education contexts where such empirical research remains limited.
