More Than a Crisis of Words: Women’s Silence in Katherine Anne Porter and Jhumpa Lahiri
摘要
We will discuss the crisis of language through the analysis of two short stories, both of which feature narratives that tend to mute the voices of the characters and create a disconnection between them: Flowering Judas (1930) by Porter and Interpreter of Maladies (1999) by Lahiri. Drawing on the works of Derrida (2013) and Orlandi (1993), we explore how the authors, by examining the relationship between silence and speech, challenge the primacy of the latter, revealing the complexities of the meaning-making process. We reflect on how the linguistic crisis may result not only from the silencing of women in patriarchal societies but also from the dissimulation in the use of words by individuals who no longer care to forge meaningful relationships.
