Introduction
摘要
This introductory chapter situates the book within the framework of Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality, emphasizing the intersections of gender, human rights, and literature. It traces the historical evolution of human rights—from exclusionary notions in antiquity to the inclusive principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights—highlighting the pivotal role of women leaders in shaping global equality agendas. The chapter critiques persistent gender-based discrimination and violence, underscoring literature’s power to reveal and challenge these injustices. By engaging novels and short stories from across the Americas, the book explores themes such as intersectionality, domestic labor, reproductive rights, leadership, and property ownership, aligning them with SDG 5 targets. Literature emerges as a transformative tool for fostering empathy, dismantling patriarchal norms, and promoting social change. This chapter frames the volume’s purpose: to connect literary analysis with global gender equality goals, inspiring critical reflection and action toward a more just society.
