Which Material? for What Use?
摘要
Using a material for useful purposes required a better understanding of the relationship between its composition and its behavior under various stresses. Two properties of a material are especially important: its mechanical strength and its resistance to corrosion. Its properties are also controlled by the form and dimensions in which it is used: massive or divided form. Many recent applications of materials rely on their miniaturization. Finally, potential toxicity, prohibitive or fluctuating costs, and difficulty in recycling are all factors that can overshadow the functional qualities of a material.
